My journey to bring you deed maps has arrived with the LOTRO Slayer of the Trollshaws Deed!
This beautiful, autumnal region is full of life – and a little bit of death. But mostly life! The slayer deed targets are found from North to South and West to East, so let’s not hang around. The Elves of Rivendell need your help in stemming the tide of evil and pushing back other threats too.
Let’s go!
Are You Already Level 40+?
If so, then you may want to consider starting your slayer deed progress at Giant Valley.
While the area is challenging, it contains three groups of targets: Giants (obviously), Trolls and Worms. There are other enemies too. It also contains some quests that count towards the Elves of Rivendell reputation.
What is Found Where?
I’ve shown where you can find these three groups in Giant Valley. Excuse the old map, it is just far clearer than the current in-game map for this portion of the Trollshaws.
The enemies here start around L39. They’re not signature strength at the entrance, but all Giants and most of the Trolls are – as far as I can tell.
Crawler-Slayer
How Many Crawlers?
First Stage: 60
Advanced: 120
Crawler Map
Of all of the objectives of the Trollshaws Slayer Deeds, Crawler-slayer is by far the most annoying. At least, it was until I made this map and I realised just how many there were!
I have put the detailed map below, but here are the three key areas I’ve marked on the simple map. And I suggest prioritising them in that order, unless you still have Wight-slayer to do.
1. Cirith Ulunn (37.6S, 11.2W)
Here, you can work on Worm-slayer at the same time as defeating crawlers. The area is pretty small, but it does have a circular “route”.
This allows you to clear everything and either wait for them to respawn or go somewhere else before returning.
2. River-level below Echad Gauradan
It seems you can find crawlers all along the southern portion of the Bruinen and around the foot of the hill that Echad Gauradan sits on. Further, the ascent to Echad Candelleth may also help you progress this deed.
If another player is at Cirith Ulunn (very likely), then don’t try to fight them for the worms and crawlers. Instead, have a nice run around the circuit marked as #2 on the map and enjoy the Trollshaws. That’s a much better plan, don’t you think?
Crawlers in Detail
Here’s the detailed map of those areas, showing where I found crawlers.
3. Nan Tornaeth with Wights
If you’re stuck, or someone else is deeding when you need to, you can go to the same places you need for Wight-slayer.
One downside is that this is the only place for Wights, so your crawlers are collateral damage. The other is that there seems to be very few, which surprised me, given how many crawlers there are in the Barrow-Downs.
In Quests
There are a couple of daily repeatable quests in the Trollshaws that involve Crawlers. These are:
- Harbingers of Death (don’t get this confused with Harbingers of the Dead from Ill Omens!)
- Rotting Roots
Both of these mark an area where Crawlers can be found. Unfortunately, once you complete your daily, that marked area vanishes from your map. Save a screenshot, or refer to this guide!
Alternatively, increment your Crawler-slayer a bit each day with those quests.
Crawler-slayer Rewards
These are the total rewards for completing both portions of the deed:
Chitin-smasher
× 15 LOTRO Points
+2,000 Virtue XP
1,200 (Elves of Rivendell)
× 30 Marks
Giant-Slayer
While some giants stand still, or have limited wanderings, some do constantly walk around a set path. Until you defeat them, anyway!
How Many Giants?
First Stage: 40
Advanced: 80
A cursory glance over the whole Trollshaws region of LOTRO would be all you needed to figure out where to hunt giants. Yep, the oh-so-subtly-named “Giant Valley”!
So you know, there is a BFG (Big Friendly Giant) who is a quest-giver. Sadly that is not his name. However, although he is in the Valley, you can find him well outside of the key giant settlement.
Where’s the Entrance?
The entrance to Giant Valley is at the Campfire (and nearby Summoning Horn) on the road South from Rivendell. However, the giants are in the eastern portion, called Stonemere. The way in (and out) of that bit is around 34.9S, 6.7W.
Old vs New Maps
I had difficulty explaining where to look for Giants, Worms and Trolls in Giant Valley. This is because the new 3D maps fade out at that point. So, below, I’ve given you two maps – one as you’ll see it in-game, and the other with the old map overlaying. For a slayer deed, I think the old one is actually more useful. But that’s my opinion!
Surviving Giant Valley
The Valley a challenging zone if you’re on-level. Giants are Signature-strength enemies – as are most, if not all, of the nearby Trolls.
If you don’t aggro too many, you should be fine solo around L37-42, assuming you’re geared well. But I’d consider taking a friend if you don’t have a good self-healing skill, or a healing pet/companion. An alternative is to use a Landscape Soldier Token to take your Skirmish Soldier, and make sure they’re set up as a Herbalist before you head in.
Giant-slayer Rewards
These are the total rewards for completing both portions of the deed:
Giant-slayer
× 15 LOTRO Points
+2,000 Virtue XP
+1,200 (Elves of Rivendell)
× 30 Marks
Troll-Slayer of the…well, Troll-shaws
How Many Trolls?
First Stage: 80
Advanced: 160
Troll-slayer Map
Daylight/Nighttime
There should be more stone-trolls out and about during the (in-game) night than in the daytime (excluding those sheltered from the sunlight).
However the definition of “sheltered” is vague. If a path is technically in a wooded area, then this classes as “sheltered” even if at some points, the whole path is illuminated by the sun.
It can hardly have come as a surprise that in the Trollshaws, one of your Slayer Deed targets would be Trolls.
What was a surprise for me was just how many different types of Trolls LOTRO created for this region. As well as the Curr Olog, other Stone-troll types I found were:
Where Are the Best Places for Trolls?
There are quite a few, in fact! There are, arguably, so many that you’ll likely clear the deed by doing all the quests in the region. But if you are purely deeding, then the numbered areas are:
- Minas Agor (around 36.5S, 18.5W)
- Small wooded area (around 32.7S, 18.3W). It has no map-marker, I just stumbled on it while trying to wander every tiny bit of the Trollshaws!
- Ost Thondol (entrance at 31.4S, 13.1W)
- Barad Glamgil and Glamgil Falls (around 28.9S, 14.2W)
- Gladdalf (around 26.5S, 17.4W) – not Gandalf!
- Taur Ornolf (36.9S, 7.7W) – Giant Valley (South-West)
→ See What is found where.
Note:
You can reach both Barad Glamgil for Troll-slayer and Amon Varadh/Ost Brandras for Wight-slayer from the Scouts Camp (28.2S, 15.3W).
For the Trolls, head North from the Stable-master and turn East once the hills let you. When the path divides, take the low road for Trolls and the high road for Wights.
Do Wood-trolls Count?
Yep! I did have to check this, because sometimes slayer deeds can be a bit picky. But both Wood- and Stone-trolls count. Except those that are actually stone because you can’t kill what’s already dead, savvy?
Sunlight doesn’t impact wood-trolls, because they came from trees and don’t turn to stone!
Troll-slayer Rewards
These are the total rewards for completing both portions of the deed:
Troll-slayer
× 15 LOTRO Points
+2,000 Virtue XP
+1,200 (Elves of Rivendell)
× 30 Marks
Wight-Slayer
How Many Wights?
First Stage: 60
Advanced: 120
Thankfully, the Dead play only a small role in the Trollshaws and are pretty much found in one place.
I marked two areas on the map simply because a few are found at “ground level”, not far from the Scouts Camp in Nan Tornaeth. Most, however, are in the ruins on the top of the hills.
Daylight/Nighttime
Only hunt Wights during the in-game nighttime. There are significantly more Wights out when it is dark.
Where are Wights in the Trollshaws?
You’re looking for the ruins of:
- Amon Varadh (27.9S, 14.9W)
- Ost Brandras (28.0S, 13.6W), and
- Ost Chall (26.9S, 14.0W)
Wights Map
To get onto the hills from the Scout’s Camp, head North, then East.
When the path splits, head up the hill for Wights and a few Crawlers.
Wight-slayer Rewards
These are the total rewards for completing both portions of the deed:
The Purifier
× 15 LOTRO Points
+2,000 Virtue XP
+1,200 (Elves of Rivendell)
× 30 Marks
Wolf-Slayer
How Many Wolves?
First Stage: 60
Advanced: 120
Wolves Map
As with other regions, wolves are founded dotted throughout much of the Trollshaws, in ones and twos. For this reason, you may find it less soul-destroying to defeat wolves as you find them during other quests.
Where are Wolves?
There are a couple of places where there are more wolves in one location, but that does not mean loads. I have marked these in the order you should look.
If you base yourself at Echad Candelleth (set your milestone – or campsite for Hunters) then areas 1 and 2 are easily reachable.
Drauglad (35.0S, 13.9W)
There are about 10 wolves here, if you detect all the stealthed ones. I translated Drauglad (via this dictionary) and found it meant “wolf valley”.
While it is very small, Drauglad is a “mini valley”, for sure.
Note: the black “wolf” at the dead end of Drauglad will not count because it is an Ancient Evil enemy, not a creature of nature.
Echad Gauradan/Draugroth 38.4S, 16.2W
While the Gauradan are not on your Trollshaws Slayer deed, the “wolf people” have wolves with them, or around them. Depending on what order you are questing through regions, you may already have done the Evendim Gauradan Slayer Deed, so you’ll be familiar with their affinity to wolves.
Draugroth is accessed via some large doors within Echad Gauradan at 38.4S, 16.2W.
Near Thorenhad
The area marked as #3 on the map is just a rough area of landscape North-East of Thorenhad. Assuming other people are not passing through here, there are a few wolves to be had.
As with elsewhere in the Trollshaws, some wolves are immediately visible, others are stealthed.
You could consider travelling between Drauglad and here to pass time between respawns. Alternatively, see the detailed map at the end of this Trollshaws Slayer Deed Guide for other wolves.
Wolf-slayer Rewards
These are the total rewards for completing both portions of the deed:
Tail-cleaver
× 15 LOTRO Points
+2,000 Virtue XP
+1,200 (Elves of Rivendell)
× 30 Marks
Worm-Slayer
How Many Worms?
First Stage: 80
Advanced: 160
Worm-slayer is probably the easiest one to do because they’re almost everywhere! Okay, maybe I exaggerate a bit. What I mean is, if the spot you’re hunting worms in has another player, you can still clear the deed by looking elsewhere.
Where are Worms in the Trollshaws?
“Hotspots” of worms are:
- Cirith Ulunn, in the southern portion of High Moor
- Nan Tornaeth, at “ground level”, there are many corrupted worms.
- The central portion of Giant Valley.
Worm-slayer Rewards
These are the total rewards for completing both portions of the deed:
Worm-carver
× 15 LOTRO Points
+2,000 Virtue XP
+1,200 (Elves of Rivendell)
× 30 Marks
Deed Rewards
Once you have completed all the above slayer deeds, you will, at last clear the Slayer of the Trollshaws Deed. For your efforts, you receive:
× 100 Marks
+2,000 Virtue XP (VXP)
+900 (Elves of Rivendell)
Trollshaws Slayer Deed Maps
I’ve given two different versions here. One is the simplified map, which just highlights key areas to focus on. The other shows dots for individual enemies I found while scouting.

Detailed Map
TLDR; Enjoy the region while clearing the Slayer of the Trollshaws deed!
Considering the difficulties and the overflow of evil you encountered in the Lone-lands Slayer Deed, crossing the Last Bridge into the Trollshaws is something of a relief!
But finding Rivendell was always a target of the Enemy, so it is no surprise that the region itself has many troubles of its own. That’s where adventurers and warriors are needed.
But don’t be so target-driven that you fail to notice the beautiful region LOTRO created for us. Sometimes looking at nature (real and digital) reminds us of what we should be fighting for and therefore, what we should be fighting against.
Have fun in Middle-Earth folks!
