Welcome dear Black Mage to the Thaumaturge Hunting Log Rank 5 guide. You finally get to clear the whole log and tick it off the to-do list. As always, it’s a great source of EXP, which may matter if this is not your first class. Or if you’re focusing on the MSQ only and need a boost to EXP to keep up with the MSQ level. Either way, I’ve done my best to make completing it as painless as possible – for you at least. The same cannot be said of the foes you’re about to burn, freeze and fry. Let’s dive in!
How to Unlock Rank 5
To be able to start Thaumaturge Hunting Log Rank 5, you must meet the following requirements:
- To be at least Level 40, as a Thaumaturge/Black Mage (naturally).
- To have cleared Thaumaturge Hunting Log Rank 4.
Thaumaturge Hunting Log Rank 4 Targets
Dragonfly
Number Required: 6

Involved in FATEs
Region/Area
Coerthas Central Highlands: Whitebrim
Nearest Aetheryte
Coerthas Central Highlands: Camp Dragonhead
Oldgrowth Treant
Number Required: 2

These enormous wandering guardian trees are pretty hard to miss. Of course, reaching them without aggroing all the other nasties in the area is a totally different thing!
Old-growth Treant Location
From the Hawthorn Hut, head through Little Solace into Larkscall. Once you’re properly in there, the Treants are easy to find.
Example Locations:
- X:26.8, Y:21.7
- X:28.1, Y:21.2
- X:27.1, Y:21.7
- X:25.7, Y:20.6 (×2)
- X:28.3, Y:21.2
Region/Area
East Shroud: Larkscall
Nearest Aetheryte
East Shroud: The Hawthorn Hut
Crater Golem
Number Required: 1

The Crater Golem can be found underground in the Spriggan Dig. While the earlier Spriggans in this area are a much lower level than you, once you descend into crater, the levels jump to the 40s. Depending where you are in the A Realm Reborn MSQ, you may have already been here to track down a certain named Spriggan.
There is nearly always one Crater Golem lumbering around down here, occasionally two. If you are vaguely on-level, expect the Spriggans to attack you also.
Region/Area
Central Shroud: The Standing Corses
Nearest Aetheryte
New Gridania: Take the White Wolf Gate Aetheryte option.
Dead Man’s Moan
Number Required: 6

The animated skeletons of drowned seamen. Nothing freaky about that, right? And by “drowned”, I mean literally, rather than just consumed by a love for Leviathan.
Dead Man’s Moan Location
On the Isles of Umbra, head towards the beach, or just into the water at the Ship Graveyard. But you only need do this if the FATE mentioned below is not on.

3rd Cohort Secutor
Number Required: 2

You know, the hardest part of clearing something like the Thaumaturge Hunting Log is when you have to face fast-moving melée enemies. The 3rd Cohort Secutors are the Pugilists of the Garlean Empire. You’ll find them in the area of Larkscall that’s just below where it says “Sylphlands” on the map.
You only need two Secutors, which is good, because, I believe, there are only two. Respawn around here is fairly quick in case someone went before you.

Morbol
Number Required: 6

These monstrocities are probably my worst kind of landscape mob. It’s so bad that I still hate The Aurum Vale even now. Get out of the way of their bad breath AoEs, else you get multiple debuffs. I’m not sure setting the Choco to heals stops them dying from it, so do try to turn the Morbol away from your companion. Needless to say, don’t have them on Tank stance. You’re not a healer, so Esuna is not an option!
Morbol Location
The Morbols are found in Larkscall in the East Shroud. For any other reason, keep away from here. The challenge is not aggroing multiple Morbols…ew.

East Shroud: The Hawthorn Hut
Lesser Kalong
Number Required: 2

On the way to Urth’s Gift you pass through a natural tunnel and it is from here that you will find the Lesser Kalongs. These bats are not solely in the tunnel, but you can find them deeper into Urth’s Gift too. They are non-aggressive by default, but that’ll change once you attack them, of course. You’d do the same if you were a Lesser Kalong.

South Shroud: Urth’s Gift

South Shroud: Quarrymill
Nix
Number Required: 5

The Nix is yet another giant toad species that can be found pretty much as soon as you exit Revenant’s Toll to the West. Look for the giant crystalline formation then just circle round it to clear this Hunting Log entry. Alternatively, if the FATE below is on, then you can do it that way, if you want to. As with all Gigantoad races, expect Sticky Tongue and their push-back AoE skills to knock you around a bit.

Toll Collector
Bear in mind, there are non-FATE Nix in the area that you will aggro if you level sync into the FATE.
Region/Area
Mor Dhona: Fogfens
Nearest Aetheryte
Mor Dhona: Revanant’s Toll
Giant Logger
Number Required: 3

The part of the Boulder Downs where you’ll find Giant Loggers is super annoying if you have not yet unlocked flying. The shard things around here mean the Giants are on different levels. Your particular target, dear Thaumaturge, are the axe-wielding ones, who are “logging” in a part of Coerthas with no trees in it. Make sure they don’t “log” you instead.
Region/Area
Coerthas Central Highland (Boulder Downs)
Nearest Aetheryte
North Shroud: Fallgourd Float
Gigas Sozu
Number Required: 2

Do you pronounce it gy-gas or gee-gas? Whatever you call the Gigas Sozu and their other tribe members, the one you want is the healer, sporting a two-handed cane. They mostly just throw the Stone skill at you, so they’re not difficult to defeat. Just ignore their size and beautiful faces and you’ll be fine.
Finding a Gigas Sozu
So I only managed to find two – (approximately) X:28, Y:13 and X:30, Y:15. In one sense that’s good because Thaumaturges and Rogues only need two of these. But it’s bad if you’re waiting for respawn. If you find others, can you let me know so I can add more to the map? Thanks!

Iron Tortoise
Number Required: 6

As you run, ride or fly South from Little Ala Mhigo in Southern Thanalan you enter Zanr’ak. The first Tortoises you see are Bronze ones (around level 43s). You need to head deeper in until you reach Iron Tortoises, which are around Level 46 – and slightly larger than the bronze ones too. They do roam about a bit and seem to often be on their own – except in the FATE below, anyway.

While scouting for landscape Iron Tortoises, I stumbled on this FATE. It seems there will be plenty of them for you here.

Synthetic Doblyn
Number Required: 6

You know, every other Coblyn/Doblyn we’ve come across in the FFXIV Hunting Logs have been related to natural materials. Oddly, now we’re in a mine, we are faced with Synthetic Doblyns. The Crafty Kobolds using their alchemy to make their own freaky army perhaps?
Where are Synthetic Doblyns?
While they are found throughout U’ghomaro Mines (in Outer La Noscea), they are also quite spaced out. I’ve marked on the maplet all the ones I found today.
For this reason I haven’t given actual coordinates as they wouldn’t be useful!

Ked
Number Required: 6

Correct me if I’m wrong, but if this is the size of a Ked…how the heck can Kedtraps catch them? This gigantic bugs are uuuugggly. The main issue I had today was locating six of them, but I was also not the only player in the area at the time.

4th Cohort Hoplomachus
Number Required: 6

We’re very near the end of the Thaumaturge Hunting Log Rank 5 now! The last two items take you into different Garlean Empire strongholds. The first is Cape Westwind. Now, the MSQ brings you here (no spoilers), so if you’ve not visited Cape Westwind yet, maybe hold off on completing the 4th Cohort Hoplomachus entry.
As with other Hoplomachus Garleans elsewhere, you’re looking for sword-and-shield fighters. Start at X:12.4, Y:6.4 and gradually fight your way West. But stay zoomed out to a degree so you can check the nearby enemies for your targets.
Travelling There
As mentioned below, you can go from Horizon. It’s miles away, especially if you can’t fly yet. Alternatively, if you have Vesper Bay Aetheryte Tickets left then using one here will save you a bit of time.

2nd Cohort Signifer
Number Required: 6

For the Thaumaturges (and Black Mages), the 2nd Cohort Signifer is your opposite number in the Garlean Empire. You’ll find them – or more likely they’ll find you – in Castrum Occidens in Eastern La Noscea. The Empire has posted Signifers high up, a bit like archer sentries. And there are loads of them too!
Get your fizz-bangs on for Eorzea. Start at around X26.0, Y:21.0 and head East into the Castrum. Have fun wreaking havoc, adventurer.

TL;DR Follow the Maps & Clear the Thaumaturge Hunting Log Rank 5
I add extra details and my usual random chat, but if you just want to be efficient, then my maplets should at least point you in the right direction. Well done on making it through the Thaumaturge Hunting Log and I’ll see you soon for a new one!
My thanks to ConsoleGamesWiki for helping me give you the related FATEs for those I didn’t spot while making the guide.
