Centuries before the invention of smart lights, there were semi-sentient flames called Yule Candles. They knew when it was daytime and when it was nighttime. And they lit themselves at night and snuffed themselves out during the day. But it wasn't clever enough to know that during a thunderstorm at midday that its services might be needed. It just slept on in blissful ignorance.
