The Black Eft is the first of its kind you'll come across doing Hunting Logs. The Bark Eft and Salamander are related species.
You'll find your Rank 1 variety in the Central Shroud along the river called the East Vein. It runs North to South (or the other way around, for the pedantic) and you'll find the Efs all along it. Beware its AoE attacks and you'll do just fine.
