We’re back for more frying and freezing of random enemies in the FFXIV Thaumaturge Hunting Log Rank 4. From cute (but vicious) Spriggans to Gigantoads, from more dead spirits to – another Yarzon, let’s clear them down as quickly as possible, hmm?
How to Unlock Rank 4
To be able to start Thaumaturge Rank 4, you must meet the following requirements:
To be at least Level 30, as a Thaumaturge/Black Mage (naturally).
In case this is your first log, there is no separate log for when you become a Black Mage. You just continue where you left off.
Thaumaturge Hunting Log Rank 4 Targets
Thaumaturge 31 Reward: 11,000
Adamantoise
Number Required:2
0
Still huge, but not as big as a Giant Tortoise, the Adamantoise lives in the swampy part of the South Shroud, rather than the dry, hot climes you might expect.
Adamantoise Location
These are found South-West of Camp Tranquil in Rootslake, South Shroud, heading towards The Lost City of Adampor. There you'll find at least five Adamantoise with a few further away too. If you find yourself with a wall of Revenants, turn back (for multiple hazardous reasons! If you RP, anyway).
The Mamool Ja Executioner is one type of this tribes combattants and can be identified as the axe-wielder.I had to put some coordinates in, but these are spread out much further than any rank 4 target I've found so far. Without waiting for respawn, I found three on the left "island" and two more on the right one. Example coords are:
Revenants are similar to the Bloated Bogy who appears earlier in various Hunting Logs. Well this is pretty much the same idea - except these are blue rather than yellow. The word "Revenant" I always hear in French as it translates as to "come back again" or "coming again" - that kind of idea. As these are Spirits who can't quite make it to the next life, that makes sense. Use your magicks and grant them the solace they seek.
If you're here for Thaumaturge rather than any other class or job, I really feel for you! It's another Yarzon, lucky you. The Russet Yarzons are dead easy to find, so easy to make dead. Once you reach Forgotten Springs, head out the southern gate towards the Sagolii Desert and turn right. There are plenty of them.
Well, FFXIV sure do like you practicing your fire incantations on swarms of insects, don't they? This time, you're looking at Dung Midge Swarms. These are found usually in single swarms, though occasionally you can find two. Some example coords are:
X:16.0, Y:27.9
X:17.8, Y:26.6
X:15.3, Y:30.9
Be aware, however that the MSQ Quest "That Weight" also requires players to defeat Dung Midge Swarms. This means, you must try to be considerate of other players. I mean, you should anyway, but if you're not on that quest, be nice and come back if another person is defeating the buzzing insects, mkay?
Yet more explosive fun with these levitating voidsent. Smoke Bombs are found around Byregot's Strike in the middle of the Sagolii Desert. There is a side quest there that involves taking down some of these, so you could kill two bombs with one stone...wait, that doesn't work.Just defeat them in your usual way!
Well, they weren't kidding when they named the Gigantoad, that's for sure! But you've already seen Laughing Toads as part of Thaumaturge Hunting Log 3.Wander up and down the river here to complete this Hunting Log entry. Just be aware that it is also a prime spot for farming Gigantoad Skins for Leatherworker crafting, so expect other players to pop by during your trip.
Don't let their fluff and long, fuzzy ears (those are their ears, right?) deceive you, Spriggans can be vicious. They love shiny rocks and hate anyone trying to prevent them from taking the shiny rocks.Finding a Spriggan not at all difficult, because they can be found at the obviously-named Spriggan Dig in the Central Shroud! They are aggressive, so if you're within a few levels, expect them to attack first. Also...there are loads!
Salamanders can be found in the Bronze Lake area of Upper La Noscea. More specifically on the water's edge as you head towards The Wanderer's Palace. You'll have no trouble spotting these flubbery, giant critters either!
Plasmoids are little orbs of storm lightning that seem attracted to the large, pointy rock in Outer La Noscea. They are not automatically aggressive, and picking a fight with one Plasmoid does not set off others - unless of course you AoE fire or ice them!Dear Thaumaturge of elemental fire, enjoy your battle with the element of lightning! Mwahahaha. Or something.
Other Locations
Per GamerEscape you can find Plasmoids in Mor Dhona, North Shroud, Western La Noscea and the Boulder Downs of Coerthas.
As if battling the element (lowercase 'e') of cold was not enough, you also have to fight the Element (uppercase 'E') of Ice directly too. Thankfully there are loads of Ice Sprites to hunt down, but you need only pick off five. I've put the approximate areas you can hunt in the minimaps here. One dot does not necessarily mean one Sprite either.
Feral Crocs have really weird, empty eye sockets and an even stranger snappy mouth. They roam the area between Camp Dragonhead and the Obervatorium in Coerthas Central Highlands. While I have put some locations on the map here, there are likely more to be found too. Be considerate if others also seem to be killing a lot of them and wait for respawn if necessary.
You know the idea behind the Will-o'-the-Wisp is similar to a siren call, yes? They will lead you to your doom, that kind of thing. Well, you need to quieten these dancing flames before they wreak havoc. You'll find them on the narrow path called Snakemolt, South of Quarrymill and not far from Amdapor Keep.
I recently found out that these - and their Phurble cousins are actually a type of Voidsent. Which would be fine, if you didn't make clothes from the Snurble Tufts that drop from them. The Golden Fleece is as described, except it has creepy eyes and is nothing like a nice fluffy sheep you normally think is associated with the word 'fleece'.There are also plenty of them if you wander around the Burning Wall, if someone else isn't there farming them for Snurble Tufts. I know it's a long way from Camp Drybone, but if you do see someone doing that - come back later.Quartz DoblynMirrorknight
TL;DR Clear Thaumaturge Hunting Log Rank 4 and Move On
We’re nearly there on the THM Logs – so I’ll begin the Rank 5 one very soon. If you don’t mind the extortionate Aetheryte fees, you can clear Thaumaturge Hunting Log Rank 4 fairly quickly. Some enemies are spaced apart, but not so far as to make it time consuming. But you visit a lot of different places – from desert to snow, for example. So try to enjoy the journey, and I’ll see you back here for Rank 5 very soon.
I have been playing MMOs for about ten years and began writing guides to The Lord of the Rings Online in 2017. I've only been creating content about Final Fantasy XIV since 2022, but I am glad for the mix. My current games include LOTRO, FFXIV and the occasional Palia session too.
