If you’re new to FFXIV…
Firstly, welcome! I have written an introduction to Hunting Logs on my guide to the Gladiator Hunting Log Rank 1. I didn’t want to duplicate content across posts, so I’ve made this link open in a new tab/window to help you.
Quest Overlap
Depending on when you receive your Hunting Log, you’ll find the following enemies as part of the THM quest My First Scepter.
The other targets of the quest are Star Marmots, but they are for the Gladiator log, not the Thaumaturge one.
Little Ladybug
Number Required: 3
You’ll find these (frankly not) Little Ladybugs as soon as you exit Ul’dah into Western Thanalan. Conveniently, a few other targets are nearby too. Although I’ve set a coordinate below, in reality these are mixed in with others around The Eighty Sins of Sasamo, either side of the steps.
For those in Limsa
If your story began in Limsa Lominsa, or you’ve just picked up Arcanist, Marauder or Rogue, then your starter quests let you know where to find Little Ladybugs. This should be in Middle La Noscea, though I need to check this as I am only just starting the Hunting Logs for those classes.

Ul’dah Aetheryte PlazaHuge Hornet
Number Required: 3
Yeah, you’re not kidding! Are these Lalafell-sized? Not that I ever want to see an enemy called “Lalafell-sized Hornet”! Anyhow, the Huge Hornets can be found just outside Ul’dah’s Gate of Nald, near Stonesthrow. This isn’t the only area either, but as there are other targets not far away, I think the respawn times here are short.
Take down the Huge Hornet before it takes you down then run away and forget you ever saw its enormous stinger.

Central Thanalan: Spineless BasinNearest Aetheryte
Ul'dah Aetheryte PlazaCactuar
Number Required: 3
These excitable, walking cactii hop around just further down the slope away from Ul’dah. Once you’ve cleared Little Ladybugs (and Star Marmots for Gladiators), head a little further West and you’ll find plenty of Cactuar. Cactuars? Cactuarii? You get the idea!

Ul'dah Aetheryte PlazaSnapping Shrew
Number Required: 3
Snapping Shrews are as close to a real Shrew as the “Shroud Hares” are to what we know a “hare” to be. i.e. Not a lot. These are more akin to moles, giant ones and they cause problems for the growers at the Royal Plantations, if you pick up the quest there (The Slaying of the Shrews).
Snapping Shrews can be found around (X22.7, Y27.0) in Central Thanalan.

Ul'dah: Steps of Nald (Exit via the Gate of Nald)Syrphid Cloud
Number Required: 3
Ever wondered how to get rid of huge clouds of disgusting fly-like bees, or bee-like flies? Well, the Syrphid Cloud is your first chance to find out! If you’re clearing this on a Thaumaturge at least you have the logical method – burn them all with fire! The rest of you, you’ll figure it out!
The Syrphid Clouds tend to be found in single groups, but occasionally you’ll find a couple together, like here:

Black Brush StationYarzon Feeder
Number Required: 3
How best to describe Yarzon Feeders? A fanged head with really long, spindly legs? Either way, I’ve always found these creatures a bit creepy. I’m not a spider person and this is a bit too close for comfort. Anyway, these Yarzons are easy enough to find. There are plenty too, even if another player is working on their Hunting Log at the same time as you.

Ul'dah Aetheryte PlazaRusty Coblyn
Number Required: 3
Ah, Coblyns – part rock, part mouth with googly eyes to boot. Literally, if you wish. Rusty Coblyns may well be your first encounter with these weird creatures in FFXIV and they come in various colours. This is because they eat rocks/ore. Yep, if you defeat one of these there’s a chance some ore may drop as loot! Though if you are also a Miner, I’m pretty sure Adalberta won’t be too thrilled that you’ve attempted to mine ore from living creatures!

Ul'dah Aetheryte Plaza or HorizonSpriggan Graverobber
Number Required: 3
These cheeky, long-eared fuzz-balls, love their rocks and shinies, but Spriggan Graverobbers can be a nuisance despite their floof.
Spriggan Graverobber Location
Conveniently, there are loads of them at the Sil’dih Excavation Site.
If you’re a new player who started in Ul’dah, you do not need to purposefully head here, though, as the MSQ brings you to this exact location.

Black Brush Station (Central Thanalan)Qiqirn Shellsweeper
Number Required: 3
These distant cousins to the rats are, shockingly, found at a place called The Rat’s Nest in Central Thanalan. This is West of Black Brush Station around (X16.5, Y19.4) and you’ll find plenty of Qiqirn Shellsweepers there for your log.
If you haven’t cleared the Hammer Beak entry in your Gladiator Hunting Log Rank 1, then you can do this just South of The Rat’s Nest.

Black Brush Station (Central Thanalan)Sun Bat
Number Required: 3
What kind of bat enjoys being outside during the daytime in an arid environment? Why, the Sun Bat of course! These flappy critters come in various levels, actually. If I remember correctly, I came across Level 7 as well as the pictured Level 10 Sun Bats.
The coordinates below are approximate, but I have marked on the maplet a few locations you can try.

When Can I Start Rank 2?
When:
- You’ve cleared Rank 1
- You’re at least Level 10
TL;DR Burn them all with Fire and Clear the Thaumaturge Hunting Log Rank 1!
Hunting Logs for all classes offer awesome early-level EXP as well as vital combat practice. Thaumaturge can be tricky to get the hang of but there’s no denying the satisfaction in burning enemies to a crisp! I hope this guide to the Hunting Log Rank 1 was useful to you. I will start my guide for the next level soon! So, go wreak havoc in the name of the Light and enjoy your time in FFXIV!
